Tim, crankshaft end play doesn't generally cause a knock but given enough travel the crank throws could be hitting something. Look for a loose flywheel, excess slop in the main & rod bearings. ~Give us some more info on the knock, is it always there? Does it get better or worse under load? Does it get better or worse when hot? Does engaging the clutch change the noise? Does it seem like every or every other revolution of the crank? Can you feel it hammering anywhere by feeling around on the crankcase? Does it have good oil pressure when the engine is hot?

You unbolt the flywheel and move over on the crank until it has like 10 thou of side movement and tighten up the flywheel. I think that is how much side play you should have. Loud clunk? When it happens, see if you can see the belt pulley move too with the sound. I think there is still more to the clunk.
