I took off the nose cone then took off the cover which has 4 screws holding it in place. Then when i turned the steering the vertical shaft went back and forth. SO i took the pin out of the big nut on top and tightened the nut and now the steering is a lot better then it was before. DId i fix it or is the nut suppose to be lose and somthing else is messed up. Thanks yfor all the help!!!

That nut holds the sector gear to the vertical shaft so if it was looses it could have been some of your problem. If you adjust the sector over closer to the worm by rotating the eccentric bushing, dont get it too tight in the middle because then it would be wayyyyy to tight out on the ends. Probably didn't fix it. The big nut only holds the gear to the shaft and you only removed the free play that through years of use accumlated because of normal wear in the splines. It would be best if you cleaned out all the old grease in the housing and under or beside the gear with the big nut on top you will find a slotted screw that holds the eccentric bushing from turning. if things arent worn to badly you could loosen said screw and rotate the bushing and see if you can get enough of the lateral movement out of the vertical shaft to suit you, otherwise it may indeed require some new parts
