I broke something in the final drive of my early 60s JD 1010 backhoe, and need to make repairs. Before I start tearing down, will I have to split the tractor if I broke the ring or pinion gear? I was hoping to only have to remove the axle housings and rear of the tractor if possible. I dont know what I broke, but I know the trans and clutch are ok but have no tractor movement. Letting the clutch out just results in noisy chatter with both rear wheels shaking.

The R&P's pinion gear is a one piece unit, part of the transmission main output shaft. About 1/2 of the transmission gears mount on it. It will only come out after the transmission is unbolted off the torque tube on the front and the final drives are removed from the back. Not a job to tackle without the parts & service manuals. Was your tractor built before or after serial number 31,000? There were several running changes made but that point made major differences to the transmission, R & P. Is your tractor gas or diesel?

This one is a 4 cylinder gas, and should be before 31000 as it has the shifter up by the steering wheel (believe that means it is an early tractor?). So this means the trans has to come off of the engine, and then everything else has to come off the rear of the trans? I have an I/T service manual on order and have a parts book. I hope I didnt break it beyond fixing, hopefully good used parts are out there.

The bolt pattern at the transmission front went from 4 to 7 bolts & studs at serial number 42000. Three major transmission cases were used. Pre 31,000,31,001 to 42,000 & 42,000 plus. The 31,001 to 42,000 had the four bolt front but a rectangular plate with six bolts above the ring gear. The case had to be relieved to clear the larger dia gear. You can look at the ring gear through there before tearing anything significant apart. Depending on which pto she came with, open a rear cover & look right at the R&P. The between the knees five speed shifter with a bent lever was used serial # 22,124 to 31,000. A straight lever was used from 31,001 plus. The funky dash shift was #10001 to #22123, that clue makes your 1010 R&P interchangeable from 420's back to serial #125,001, all 430's, 435's,440's and 1010's up to #31,000. Ratios may vary.

Wow thanks for the info! I got a little confused there though, does my early model have a cover I can pull to look at the ring and pinion, or was that only on later models? I can try and get a pic of the rear of the machine if needed, the hoe is still attatched so a good pic might not be easy to get yet. Thanks again!

As yours has the dash shift it won't have the wee six bolt relief groove cover above the ring gear. If hunting for a R&P & serial number plates are missing. Then look for a dash shift or between the knees shifter with bent handle, four bolt transmision front & no relief cover.Or any slant dash 420,430 or 440. Of course this all assumes the R&P is worn to razor sharp nubs. You could be lucky & just shredded the clutch. It may share most parts with Massey's from that era, the 435 does.

Thanks for the claification, looks like the tractor will be coming apart. Unfortunately I am sure I broke something inside and not the clutch. Letting the clutch out resulted in a banging noise and both wheels shuddering; then after a few attempts at moving the machine now all I get is a grinding inside and no wheel movement at all. Does it in any gear, so hopefully I didnt hurt the trans. After looking at a couple machines in my price range it became apparent that my machine really is in decent shape, I hope I can get parts to fix it.
