Joe, for some reason battery voltage is getting to the (ARM) post [bigger of the two] on the generator. ~You either have a defective regulator, the wrong regulator or it is hooked up wrong. ~Polorizing has nothing to do with your problem, it can effect whether it charges or not, but won't effect battery disconnect (cut-out). ~There isn't a chance you put a 6 volt regulator on a 12 volt system is there? ~Probably the place to start is to make sure it is wired correctly. The wire coming from the ammeter (should have battery voltage at all times) gets hooked to the (BAT) terminal on the regulator,,,the load wire (if you have one) coming from the ignition S/W gets hooked to (L) terminal on the regulator (if your replacement regulator doesn't have an (L) terminal the load wire gets hooked to the (BAT) terminal with the battery wire from the ammeter,,,the (Fld or F) terminal on the regulator gets hooked to the (F) post [smaller of the two] on the generator,,,the (GEN) terminal on the regulator gets hooked to the (Arm or A) post on the generator {larger of the two]. ~There should be NO other wires hooked to either the (GEN) or (F) terminals on the regulator. ~If the regulator is hooked up per above, use a volt meter or test light to check for battery voltage at the (ARM) post [bigger of the two] on the generator (engine off). If battery voltage is present with the engine off, you have the wrong regulator, or a defective regulator. ~As a first or final check: the (BAT) terminal on the voltage regulator should show battery voltage at all times but the (GEN) terminal should only show voltage with the generator spinning & not with the engine stopped..... ...
