Joe, with that generator having been backfed powered there is no telling what happened to it. First lets go back to basics, you say it is a 12 volt system , does it have the original 6 volt generator on it yet, or has it been changed to a12 volt generator? ~Now lets test the generator; with the tractor running at wide open throttle, run a jumper wire from the (F) post on the generator (smaller post) to a good CLEAN ground spot on the generator or engine block (it MUST be a clean place without any paint or rust), then see if it charges, if no charge leave the field jumper wire on & then run a jumper wire from the (ARM) bigger of the 2 [posts] on the generator to the battery wire at the regulator, if it charges then, you have a bad regulator or regulator ground. If it still doesn't charge, make sure you have battery power to that battery wire (the one coming from the ammeter to the regulator) if that wire has battery power you have a bad generator (could be a burnt out armature due to the power backfeed or stuck brushes or ?). ~If at any time you have touched battery power to the (F) post on the generator or (Fld) terminal on the regulator you probably burnt the regulator out.
~Post back with any questions or findings..... ..... .....
