How many volts should a 12 volt generator put out if you use a volt meter and touch the "A "post and the other to a ground, how many volts should it put out?

Joe, the output of a generator depends on how fast shes turned and the amount of field current which the regulator or a light switch resistor etc allows. If its open, unloaded and unregulated and the field is grounded and you put a voltmeter on the A terminal, its hard to say how high she could reach. To get a meaningful test, it needs to be connected to a battery and the field grounded either through a Voltage Regulator or direct grounded or through the light switch, at which time it should read around 13 to 14 volts. Let us know Ol John T in Indiana

Joe, that depends on the generator, the speed it is being turned & how much load your volt meter puts on the open circuit.
~To answer your question, I don't know, but probably well over 18 volts at wide open throttle with no load to charge into.
~That kind of measurement won't tell you much & probably isn't a good way to evaluate a generator.
~What are you trying to do?
