I have a new filter, changed pump gasket, fixed pipe from pump to filter, the other pipes look and feel okay, the pressure regulating screw is almost at the bottom (screwed in), con rod bearings seem tight enough. Using 10-30 oil. Any suggestions?

What is under the big cover nut on top of the filter case? Is it the filter stud with a nut beside the cover nut? The pump cover has some uneveness on it. Thanks for any suggestions.

If you are referring to the optional auxiliary filter on top of the crankcase near the flywheel: The large T-handled nut on top of the filter cap that sticks straight up is a handle to 'backwash' the re-useable filter element. Unscrew it a few turns until the rod will pull up. Pull it up to the end of it's stroke briskly a couple of times. There is a disk at the other end of the rod to force clean oil back through the mesh. This is to flush the large contaminants from the outside of the element so they may drop to the bottom of the housing to be cleaned out later during the oil change. The other large nut with a copper washer under it on the cap is merely a filter bypass and won't raise the system pressure.

When I got into the one on my '30 D, the element was crunched on the ends and lying in the bottom of the housing. I wasn't aware they are available so I made an adapter for a spin-on oil filter that screws into the cap. With the cap in place there is no outward indication of modern full-flow oil filtration.

One other comment, if the pump cover is uneven as you mentioned in the last paragraph, you will lose pressure due to leaks around the pump gears. If you are extremely careful, you can put a smooth surface on it with a belt sander. However, I strongly recommend you have a machine shop mill or grind it flat.

Johan, what year "D" do you have. It kind of sounds like you have an early with the top mounted oil filter?

I tightened the adjustment some more and the gauge is now a bit past the red STOP mark. Maybe the problem is a weak spring? The tractor is a 1938 model.
