Have rebuilt carb, new points, plugs, and condenser, checked coil, good spark, overhauled engine, have 105 PSI compression. Tractor will idle good, but will not run at speed without missing and backfiring. Cylinders seem to be flooding with gas. Spark plugs get fouled black. Tractor does not smoke.

I took off carb to check the choke. It was working properly. I couldn't see the top of the nozzle sticking up in the throat of the carb. I took the bottom off the carb and found a washer on top of the nozzle turned sideways, holding it down. I straightened it up and put it back on the nozzle and reinstalled it. It still does not run good, but it does run better. The carb was sent to a carb shop for repair before I put it on the tractor. Do you think this washer is my

The nozzel is supposed to have a spring holding it in position.

RH, if it starts & idles good, then the float & seat system are probably OK & the timing is probably OK. I would check the choke - the 51 B has a coil spring on the choke shaft that is susceptible to getting out of position. A half closed choke will let the engine run well at low throttle settings, but flood at speed. You can check it by loosening the intake elbow & looking into the carb intake with a flashlight.

The obvious things that come to mind (if the spark is as good as you say and its timed right) based on the symptoms you describe are: Carbs float level to high, needle valve and seat are not properly seating, power adjustment set too rich (open out to far), choke butterfly is partly closed. I would start by looking at the choke to see if its opening, then leaning out (screwing in) the carbs load adjustment needle, and if she still runs rich or black smokes or blacks the plugs, then check the needle valve and seat and float level. If the float is leaky the same can happen cuz it sinks to the bottom and never raises to shut off the needle valve. However, if she idles good many of those cures I mentioned may not be the problem. Play around with those things and post back what you find and be sure the timing is right. If the plugs have been wet gas fouled or too blackened I would clean them or try fresh ones in addition to checking ur float and seat and power adjustment and timing before you try again. Good luck Ol John T in Indiana
