I am considering installing Genesse 6V electronic ignition in my 40S. This would be to prevent plug fouling, point gaping and hard starting. What is the report from anyone who has done it? Must the battery be always like brand new? Any other improvements from this move? Is it worth it?

I have a 420 U and would like to install the electronic ignition. Where do I get the kit, about how much does it cost, and how hard is it to install?

I've installed 6 of these units and would not have a tractor without them. The higher voltage solves a lot of problems.

Make certain that the coil sees 6.0V or more when running and points closed. High resistance conections, failing ignition switches etc will cause weak spark with any ignition system.

Jod, as an electrical engineer I can tell you DEFINITELY the high energy electronic igntion is superior to the original points and condensor electrically speaking for better performance. However, if youre a purist and like original equipment, it of course, would be a no no. I could write an article on the how and why its better but thats too much for here lol. I think Gennessee makes them for positive or negative ground and remember your tractor came originally from the factory as positive ground. To answer your battery question, actually, if you had a weak battery, the electronic ignition would probably supply more spark gap energy across the plug then would the points set up. I think its worth it if you seek better performance (wont have to buy any more points or condensors) and dont mind its not still original, but I think all you do is remove the points and condensor and replace with the magnetic pick up, and no one knows whats under the distributor cap anyway. I have installed several of these kits and the only exterior difference you see is that there are two wires from the distributor instead of one, and with a little creativity this could even be camouflaged. They are well worth the effort. Mike
