I had a good running AR before I started the body work . I now have the mag timing out enough that I cant use the mag mount holes .Need help to figure out how to time the govenor to the timing gear.I also would like to know which mark on the block to use to match up to the left hand impulse mark . Thanks.

Bryan, after you line it all up such that the LH Impulse Timing Mark on teh Flywheel is at 3:00 O Clock lined up with the mark om the side, the left hand cylinder is at TDC on it compression stroke, the mags female drive flange slot is level with the ground straight front and back, then you position the mag such that the first leading brush tip is to the left (CCW) of where it is ready to wind and trip past the top plug terminal,,,,, , Then you have to turn the flywhel back retarted just enough so the female drive cog on the mag fits in the slot, then snug it down and you should be in time if the flywheel is on right. You may have trouble fiting it in because once that drive cog is level, its past where the mag would then be tripped over, so try to set her up as above and then retard enopugh to fit the mag and post back what happens. Good Luck Ol John T in Indiana

Bryan, line up the L/H impulse mark on the flywheel with the case mark, with the L/H piston at TDC on the compression stroke. [the case mark is the mark on the tin cover at 3 o'clock behind the flywheel]. [At that time the mag drive slots in the governor to mag drive flange should be fore/aft “run parallel to the ground”]. ~Make sure the flywheel in on correctly & the mark on the flywheel is lined up with the mark on the crankshaft [if no marks, or some doubt, insert a pencil in the L/H spark plug hole & turn the flywheel in one direction until the L/H piston touches the pencil, then mark the flywheel at the case mark, then turn the flywheel in the other direction until the piston touches the pencil again, then mark the flywheel at the case mark there, 1/2 way between the marks is the real TDC. ~If the mag drive flange slots aren’t parallel with the ground with the flywheel lined up at L/H impulse to case, you will have to unbolt the governor & lift it up to turn the governor shaft to set it correctly, or try to remove the L/H governor cover & see if you can re-time it by moving the gear to cam position. NOTE: the L/H governor cover gasket is actually a shim(s) & must have the same thickness installed when replacing the cover.
~If the flywheel is on correctly & the mag drive flange is parallel to the ground with the L/H impulse on the flywheel lined up with the case mark, suspect an improperly set mag impulse stop ring on the back of the mag. If you tell us the mag type & model we will give you the correct stop ring setting.
