On my 620 power steerign pedestal, right where the steering shaft splines in to the larger shaft that goes into the flow control valve, when you turn the steering shaft, that larger flow valve shaft sort of springs in and out (back n forth horizontally) approximately 1/8 of an inch. On the opposite end, the end cap bearing and shims to set end play next to the worm have been replaced and shes tight there. The seal under teh entry shaft has also been replaced and there are no leaks there. If you remove the small allen inspection plug, you see the roll pin and it appears good there. My Question is, why does the big shaft spring in and out back and forth, and how do I adjust or repair it. Ol John T

John, The shaft that you are referring to is the actuating sleeve. This sleeve is being internally actuated back and forth by the steering cams within it when turned in either direction. This movement that you are seeing is what moves the valve spool back and forth to port oil to either a right or left turn. The spool valve has a paddle like fork that transfers the movement of the actuating sleeve to the spool valve. Inside the valve housing the actuating sleeve has a groove in it that the fork or paddle goes into. When you see the end of the sleeve move back and forth the spool vale inside is being moved by the actuating sleeve. So to sum it all up the movement that you are referring to is normal. Hope you can follow what I am trying to explain and more so hope this answers your question, if not holler back. Dave W.
