there is an old 2 bottom pull type plow for sale around here. it is a 2 lever, spoke wheels with rubber tires, and good points, they want $175.00, is this a good deal? Also, it has some type of clutch lever on the left wheel, like a gear box. what does this do? lift and raise it? what is the chance it wont work? can i buy parts for the clutch?

First, is it a Deere? Are there any numbers on the beam if it is a Deere. Need more info.

The beam numbers are on the beam right as they start to curve back to the bottons. The 52 has beam numbers of, 610, 611, 612, or 613. It will have two out of those 4 on it. I could be a #4 plow. #4 plows have beam numbers of, 583, 584, or 623. Let me know what you find.

The 52 plow has the same size wheels side for side. The 4 plow has one smaller wheel and a bigger one. That helps to.

Will, I 've heard that about the wheel sizes a number of times but it just ain't so. The early 4B (4C, 4D) used a 32" land wheel if steel wheels were supplied, but about 1942 the vertical length of the land axle was changed and a 26" land wheel was standard equipment for a plow on steel. I think the reason was early 4B's on rubber tires (kind of rare) used a 21" land wheel tire and after the enclosed clutch was adopted in 1940 the rubber tire option was a 16" tire which was becoming more popular for automobiles and thus more available. To keep the depth range about the same with rubber or steel the axle was changed and the 26" steel wheel was used. I have a couple of these. In addition there were several wheel options and accessories, like extensions for floatation. I hope this doesn't add to the confusion. Bob

My specialty is the 51 and 52 plow. I don't know much about the 4 series plow. He never gave the beam numbers so I don't know if it is a 4 or a 52. Thanks for the info on the 4 plow. Hope he uses all of this info that we gave him.

The clutch on the land wheel raises and lowers the plow. There should be an arm that points up with a hole in the end. This is where the rope that is used to raise and lower the plow is tied. 1 pull drops the plow and then a consistent pull will raise it while it is moving. I am currently working on a 52. The condition of the shares, moldboards, landsides, and frogs are important. It is difficult to find plows with those items in good condition. It is really hard to find parts for the bottoms. I called the JD collectors center for information to no avail. I talked to my Uncle who is a member of the 2 cylinder technical council and he said my best bet was to contact an Amish blacksmith to have them re worked. There must be some shares out there but you will have to scrounge for them. I went to my JD dealer and after about an hour of digging through old parts book, I ended up replacing both bottoms with newer parts. (Frogs, moldboards, shares, and landsides) It cost me WAY more than I thought it would. Everything lines up properly and I'll have just the throw-away shares to replace in the future. It won't be a collectors piece but I intend on using it on a regular basis so I dropped the cash. I bought the plow at an auction for $110. Everything else on the plow is in excellent shape. If I had to do it over I probably should have waited for a plow with better shares and moldboards. (Of course I have been looking for one of these for about a year now) Good luck.

The only thing that usally goes wrong is the cluch gets rusty or packed with grease and needs to be cleaned. I have a 51 one bottom and a 52 two bottom. Both work. I haven't heard of anyone having problems. How are the sares? Don't know how to spell that word. You going to use?
