Thanks for some advice. what does it mean when you ask "does the mag spring back" i am only 16 and am not the best with engines but i'm trying. Do i need to take the cover off the mag? and is it hard to replace one of these?? where do i get the parts?? I got a parts book so i should be figure it out. All i know when i try to crank it over it doesn't even attempt to fire! Like 3 weeks ago it started when ever we turned it over but it ussually took it 5 or 6 times to turn before it would fire. I went through the carberator and everything went looked good in there. the battery turns it over real good. We were going to try a new battery anyways (cant hurt) But mostly i need to know what it means whe the mag snaps back?? do i have to take the mag cover off to check this. Thank you you guys a very knowledgeable and i am glad you share it with others thanks.

39B, probably more than half of the 52B's had distributors, mags were an available option. Check & see which you have, they look just alike so it's hard to tell from the outside. If you have a key ignition & a 6-volt wire going to a bolt& nut on the side of the mag/dist housing, then it is a distributor. If it is a dist then there is no impulse spring & you should not hear the 'mag snap'. Hope this helps.

39B, there is an impulse cup, stop ring, pawls & spring on the governor side of the mag that momentarily holds the mag shaft from turning about 20-30* before the piston approaches top dead center. As the flywheel keeps turning the impulse stop ring assembly holds the mag from turning & the spring winds up, when the flywheel (including crankshaft, rods & pistons) gets to about TDC the stop assembly lets go & the mag spins [past the firing point quite fast, & makes a good spark].
~If the spring is broken, or the pawls are stuck, or the stop ring is broken, the mag doesn't get held until the piston reaches TDC & doesn't snap over fast enough to produce a strong spark. You then end up with a weak & very early spark that won't usually start the engine at cranking speeds.
~Depending on the impulse cup & spring wind up, the impulse usually quits working at about 250 RPM. ~Once the engine is running & over 250 RPM the impulse is not important & has no effect on the engine..... [exception: if the impulse spring is broken or weak the mag will fire at the impulse setting even when running, which is around TCD give or take a little].
~If your impulse is working you should be able to hear a distinct snap or loud click from the mag as you slowly turn the engine over or pull it slowly in high gear with the clutch engaged.
~If you don't hear a snap you have a failed part in the impulse assembly or you have a distributor & not a mag.
~If you determine it has a broken impulse (probably a broken spring) post back & we will talk you through a mag spring replacement & set up. We will need to know the type & model of mag you have..... ..... .....
