My D is running ok, but I would still like to know the correct setting for the Wico X magneto (from the trip side). The magneto coupling is horisontal at LH Impulse mark. Why is the flange on the governor housing set slanted? All other JD´s has it straight up and down? Thanks.

Johan, the timing on the late "D" is 35* BTDC & the earlier "D" is a different mag with a non adjustable lag angle so that leaves a little guess work on what it should be.
~I set my own personal unstyled "D"s to 30* {when using a Wico X, which is seldom} & that puts the mag stop ring index mark at 3-1/2 marks to the left of the "center" housing mark.
~At least that's what I have always done, & they run & pull great there.
~Rod sent me a series of fax sheets on the Wico XH & XHD mags [basically still an X mag] & it seems that Wico offered a #7596 (25*) long lug drive cup that was used on Deere "D" high compression conversions that made the mag a 25* conversion & changed the center mark to 3*. I haven't had time to totally investigate why they did this & it could have something to do with keeping the mag straight when the timing is set to 25*.
~In any case [looking from the drive cup end of the mag] if you set the mag stop ring index mark at 3-1/2 marks to the left of the center mark you will be real close to what you need. If the tractor spark knocks with that setting re-set the stop ring to 2-1/2 marks left of center. ~When you have the mag out, see if it has a 25*or # 7596 stamped on the cup, if so E-mail me or post back & I will give you a new setting (even if it has the 7596 cup, the 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 marks left of center will be close to correct). If you find that the cup is the 7596 & the mag is still tilted, or it doesn't have that cup & the mag is tilted, let me know as that will help me understand more about the cup vs. mag angle..... ..... ..

Thanks for the information Clooney. I have now set it at 3½ marks left of center. The mag is an XH1042 with "3744" stamped on the cup. The mag is now straight up and down, with the top as far towards the radiator as possible.

If it is running right it must be set right. If it isn't broke why fix it??
