I went mad recently and brought home a pile of scrap that used to be a JD model GM and intend to restore it . How come there is so little reference to the GM model anywhere and in particular, here in Australia?

Jimbob, I think the reason you don't see more info on the GM is that they are basically just styled Gs. When JD decided to update and style the G during WWII, the War Production Board specified that if they wanted to raise the price, they would have to redesignate the tractor. Thus the GM - or G Modernized. They produced the GM into 1947 I believe, and at serial number 26,000 the tractors simply became "G"s once again - there was no difference between the last GM and the first styled G, other than the location of the batteries. Basically any info that applies to a G will apply to a GM. J.R. Hobbs "Styled Letter Series" book gives an excellent description/history of both the GMs and the styled Gs. I got my copy through Green Magazine, but it may be available elsewhere. I'm no expert on Gs, despite the name, just a huge fan. So anybody else feel free to jump in here if I missed something. Good luck with your GM.

Jimbo Green Magazine and Two Cylinder ran articles on them, but I don't have the issue at hand now (I'm at work).G-MAN describe the "GM"s pretty doggone good. There are some rare Gm's especialy some of the first that came out on steel(four speeds) fifth and sixth can be added later if rubber is installed the flywheel on a hand crank "GM" is different than an U/S "G" due to the cover for the fifth and sixth gear. There are some wide front (GW)s an (GN)s around serial numbers 25,000 that are sort of scarse so keep and eye on this area you can never tell were one will pop up.
