Just looked at Moms (new to her)JD112 mower. Guessing it to be 20-25 years old,has hyd.lift mower deck, variator speed, and 18 HP Kohler. Anyway, can't get the pto to engage, when you try it boggs motor down and just spins on belt(new) in same spot. What am I missing? Does knob on front of mower axle have something to do with it?How does belt tension adjust? (I know it is a new JD belt, don't know may be wrong one,it was on it) Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Joe

Thank you guys for all the input. Got the old mower going this evening. I think it had been sitting a LONG time! Got everything freed up finally and she runs great!Wish they still made them this good. Thanks again! Joe

I have two 112's & Dad has one. Every time we have experienced the problem you describe it was the deck belt. Either it is rolling over one of the sheaves & binding up, an idler has a bad bearing or I have even seen sticks & mouse nests get caught in the deck belt causing the mower to bind. The deck belt has some fairly tight bends & runs some pulleys run close to eachother.

Do as the other posts said & make sure the knob on the right front is properly tensioning the primary mower belt first. If that doesn't work, drop the deck & remove the top cover taking a peek inside.

Good luck.

If your engine is trying to die when you engage the pto and the belt is slipping, it sounds like something isn't wanting to turn in the deck or whatever you have installed. Remove the PTO belt and try engaging the clutch - if everything is okay there, check to see that the blades turn free on the deck and everything is okay on the deck belt and pulleys, etc. Even if your belt wasn't sufficiently tight, the deck should still turn some. If the belt doesn't move at all, you have a problem somewhere else.

Joe:

I had a 214, and I think the belt tightener is the same. That knob pulls on a spring that pulls on the idler below the PTO clutch, and it keeps tension on the pto to deck belt. Tighten that as far as you can by hand. It will be pretty tight.

That should take care of it for you.
