Terry H: Well, there are only two ways to get into that transmission, and that's from the top (gear shift quadrant), or through the backend. The good news is that there aren't all that many parts, and as far as the PTO lever linkage goes, it could be as simple as a sheared woodruff key or a cotter pin. Bad news is that it's way in the bottom, and the transmission cross shafts might be in your way. Any work that has to take place from behind involves draining the transmission/rearend, and probably splitting the differential case from the main case. That's how I attacked a '48 "A" once. Splitting them there isn't all that bad, and the pto will be exposed. Then again, it depends on what the problem is. You say it was making a racket. Did it sould like gears were stripping ? Did you try to kick it out of gear, and that's when the PTO linkage failed ? Does the PTO work now, and just the lever needs help ? Tell us more. In the meantime, this diagram might help a bit.
