I am working on a '50 A and trying to get the cam out. Governor is off, took the two bolts and the nut off the cam gear, took the cam bearing race part off the flywheel side but don't know how to get the bugger out. I know the gear has to come out the top but not sure how to get the shaft moved so that can happen. If the shaft is to go left, the bearing there holds it, if it goes right, the gear blocks it. What simple answer am I missing? Do I need a bearing puller? Thanks for all help on this.

I said that exactly backwards on the left to right part. the gear blocks it from going left. I was facing the rear of the tractor working on this.

All I can tell you is that I had to remove the gear from the cam to get it out of my G - I'm thinking that's probably what you'll need to do. Make sure to mark the gear and the cam so you can index them properly upon reassembly.

Do you have the reduction gear cover removed so that the camshaft can slide to the right far enough to get the gear out? There should be a spring on the RH end of the camshaft to provide preload for the bearings. I don't think you can remove the cam without removing the reduction gear cover. I'm reading out of the I&T book here and that's what it says needs to happen. You also need your lifter bracket removed. Sorry about the other post - I didn't remember that I had the cover off when I pulled my camshaft out. The reduction gear cover removal is a little involved, so you may want to get a manual.

Thanks for the reply. Yes I have the first reduction cover off and the lifter bracket is out as well. The bearing on the right side that won't let the shaft slide to the clutch side is because the race bevels inward to the tractor. Is that the right way for it to be facing? If I could get the shaft another couple inches to the clutch side, the gear would then come off. Not sure what else I am doing wrong. I have an I&T book and a parts manual but you never know if what is found when you get in there was messed up by the guy before you. Thanks again for your continued help.

Have you tried taking a brass drift and driving the camshaft towards the clutch side? It sounds like the bearing is pointing the right way to me -there's really only one way it can go in there. You just need to get the race out of the bore so that the cam can slide over far enough. I would use a drift and try to persuade it over until you can get the race off the end, then it should slide over far enough to remove the gear.

I might try that one. It is on a parts tractor so there isn't much else in the way. I just don't want to tear the shaft up getting it out.

Should have both bearing cups off left and right side and it takes a puller to remove roller bearing off the end of cam. Then it should slip right out.
