I just started my A that has been sitting in a field for several years. it has a delco remy distributer. i sanded the points, put new plugs in it and it started after pulling it around the yard all day. ran on 2 cylinders. i drove it around for a while, put it in the barn. about 3 days later, it was running on only 1 cylinder. so i put new plug wires on it and still runs on 1. what is going on?

Joe, Once the points have their silver coating burned or sanded off, they are prone to acting up. Then, once you get a weak spark due to a point problem, its always number one left that hits the most while number 2 right dotn do much and thats so even if they are working perfectly at idle. I woild install a fresh set of points and clean ur plugs and I bet you will be ok. If not, post back. Ol John T in Indiana

Joe:

Have you checked that it is sparking on the bad cylinder ? Also, if it had been sitting for a long time, it might have a valve that has decided to start sticking or is stuck. Is the compression adequate on the bad cylinder ? Does it backfire, or shoot flame up the stack ?

Also, it could have flaked off a good sized piece of carbon that has lodged in the plug or it is holding a valve open. After sitting for a while, stuck rings could allow oil to be making it's way up and fouling the plug.

Start with the spark, then compression. Since it's single barrel carb, what #1 gets, #2 gets, too.
