The power steering on my newly acquired 620 works. I drained the old fluid and replaced with JD ps fluid. The ps system builds up pressure so that when I unscrew the dipstick, you can hear the air escaping. My understanding is that the sintered bronze plug in the dipstick is supposed to allow the pressure to equalize. I tried cleaning it by soaking in solven overnight. Didn't work. How important is this? A new dipstick is $50 and the sintered bronze plug is not replaceable. I thought about drilling a tiny hole in the plug. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Spray some brake or carb cleaned in small cup and turn dipstick upside down in it. Let soak for 4 hours. Then take compressor air and blow air from holes drilled in indicator while plugging other holes an put some brake cleaned on brass part. should see bubbles. Worked on mine. Vent allows very little air to pass.

My choice would be to drill the smallest hole I could through the sintered bronze. As long as you keep the access hole covered, I don't think you will have any trouble.

John, that bronze [filter] is a pain to clean. Try soaking it in lacquer thinner then using compressed air. ~If someone has scraped at it with a screwdriver it will be very hard to get to vent correctly, that bronze closes it's pores easily.
~You probably could drill a small hole, but if any water gets on top of the cap it will enter the steering system.
~Try cleaning it another time before resorting to drilling a hole or replacement.

Thanks for the replies. I soaked it in brake cleaner fluid with no luck. I tried blowing air in one of the holes and plugging the others. Air kept coming out around where the pipe fits into the cap. I will try some more soaking and air before I drill the hole.

John, try the lacquer thinner, brake clean isn't much good at cutting old paint & oil that has turned into varnish from heat.

I soaked the PS cap/dipstick in lacquer thinner. It doesn't build up pressure like it used to. I think it may have worked. Thanks for the help.
