I have purchased a 1937 Jonh Deere "D" already disassembled. I am starting to put the engine back together and I am having trouble with the timing marks on the camshaft and crankshaft gears. I have found a punchmark on the cam gear. But the only marks that I can find on the crankshaft are a number "78", a letter "A" and a letter "V" . The repair manual does not mention any of these marks. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks a lot..... .....john.

John, unless someone has marked the cam to crank in the past you probably won't find any marks.
~ The cam to crank should have been marked in relation to each other before disassembly.
~In case you didn't do that [or it wasn't done], just install the L/H exhaust push rod & valve train [head must be on] then set valve lash to .030" then move the cam until the L/H exhaust valve just starts to open [actually "0" lash] or as the rocker to valve just gets tight, when the "L/H exhaust open" mark on the flywheel lines up with the case mark [or within 1 inch].
~To move the cam...loosen the R/H cam bearing & remove the L/H cam bearing then move & rotate the cam to crank timing.
~If you look at the cam's L/H cam lobe you can pretty well guess by looking when the cam follower will start to lift, if you have the flywheel "L/H exhaust open" to case mark lined up you can install the cam pretty close to where it belongs. ~Don't worry about the governor timing as the mag drive flange can be removed & turned on the "D" after final assembly {there are no marks on the governor gear} ....After assembly, just bring the flywheel "L/H impulse" to line up with the case mark, then remove the nut on the governor drive flange, pull it off & turn it until the slots are fore/aft [running parallel with the ground].
~If you want, you can bring the flywheel to ["L/H impulse" to case mark line up], then just install the governor with the slots running fore/aft as that will save the flange removal part.
~If you don't understand this [it is much easier to actually do than explain], or have other questions, just post back.....
