The man we bought the tractor from said that the sending gauge was in the wrong place and it said the gauge then read that engine was to Hot. Is this what the known problem was?? So we should try just water and see if that helps the problem?? thanks

John Deere moved the temp sender from the water outlet on top of the head to the back of the block
at some point. I think they had the gauge calibrated differant as the gauge that I was able to get from my dealer ,also wrong color face, black not white, in my M that has sender in top will heat up fast and go to around 200 degrees
but stops there and never boils out any. I think this is normal as I've heard this from other people. It does take alot of heat to get thermo-siphon cooling going. My radiator core is new and hoses and belt so I never let the high temp. bother me as it never pegged the gauge.

39B, not sure the gage sender was in the wrong place, Deere just put it in a better place on the later 40's~430. ~Yes, try just plain water to see if that makes a difference, if it does then use less antifreeze in the cooling system.
~It takes very little antifreeze to keep the system from freezing enough to break anything, it takes more to keep ice crystals from forming & that is what the charts are designed to show.
~Just put a thermometer in the top of the rad & see what the coolant temperature is there [that top tank water is just exiting the engine].
