O.k....so finally figured out when it wasn't getting any fuel, something was going on....checked the archives on the site and advice was to check the screen on the inlet into the carb...I can't find the durn thing....would a 49 M not have a filter there? Did find out that the float was sticking, but in the closed position...all I ever heard of was sticking in the open position and flooding. Any advice on getting the "valve" to operate more freely and open and close without a problem when the float moves? I tried spraying some "gunk" in there, but it apparently didn't work.....thanks again....Jerry

more than likely varnished from old gas. Pull bottom bowl off and remove float and needle and seat. Use real fine steel wool or sandpaper if its a metal needle. Otherwise just spray some carb cleaner on it. Should do the trick.

Once you have cleaned the needle valve and float, you might try a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank. My 1953 60 had varnish built up in the tank and everytime I tried to run the thing, the varnish would break loose and stop up the inlet in the filter bowl. I put a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in about 5 gallons of gas and run that through it. It sputtered and missed some, but I haven't had to drain the gas tank again for about a month now.
