620 Clutch Lever Bushing

The bushing on my clutch lever has a bunch of play. I have removed the special nut and the pto shaft foot pedal assembly. Now I have the pivot bolt through the casting. How do you remove the pivot bolt. It looks like it is just pressed or pulled into the casting. I thought of putting a nut on it and trying to drive it out. Don't know how tough that casting is though. Thanks.

I got the clutch lever pivot pin removed. I used a one inch socket over the head of the pin and a nut on the threaded end. I used a large c-clamp and put as much pressure on it as I could. Then a couple of gentle taps on the c-clamp and it came right out. The local JD dealer even had a bushing in stock for $3.30. Thanks again for the responses.

John, the rest of the fellows are right about not beating on the casting. And yes, I do have pullers for sale. They are indeed $25 plus shipping and I have several made up and ready to ship. They are a heavy-duty unit and I have gotten several good replies from users. If you need one let me know. Mike

Thanks for the responses. Pounding out the bolt just didn't seem right to me. All I have done so far is use penetrating oil and some light tapping. Sounds like I had better get or make a puller. I sure don't want to break that casting.

I think that it is worn past the bushing so may have to have it built up and reamed out. The hardened washer sounds like a good idea to.

do not beat on the bolt. you can break that casting an then you will have problems. buy that puller or make one. you will not regret it. i have had to repair several of them for people that thought that they could just tap it out. the cost of the puller is nothing like the cost of a new first reduction case or having the trouble of repairing or haveing someone repair the case. an then you have a reapired case. an you will notance it from then on. just my 2 cents worth

John, you can make a puller using 2 pieces of 3/8" steel about 6"-8" long with a hole in the center of one that just fits over the head of the pivot stud. You can either drill a hole near the ends of the steel & use bolts to pull it together or a couple of "C" clamps. ~CAUTION: don't beat on that stud too hard or it's very possible to break the ear off the 1st reduction cover.
~I usually use a thin hardened washer between the clutch lever & 1st reduction cover when re-assembling so the nut can be tightened over time to keep the side play out of the clutch lever....

I pre-heated mine with propane, and alternately heated, applied penetrating oil, heat, oil, a few times, then tapped the bolt out. I do know that I have seen several castings nickle rod welded right there, so it is possible to break that ear off.

Someone on this board sells pullers for this purpose, and hopefully they will also respond.

A new bushing does make a difference. You can have the bore of the clutch rod worn, too, and it might need built up and redrilled, or make a custom brass bushing.
