Joe, you didn't give us the year or engine type, but 45-50 lbs is low for any of them. [even at 1000' elevation]
~Is it a hand start? If so, the compression will very depending on the cranking speed you use.
~Make sure you are checking the compression on a HOT engine with the carb & choke wide open, [if air can't get in it can't be compressed].
~If it runs ok & the compression is actually as low as you show I would suspect worn rings & piston ring grooves that allow leakage at cranking speeds but seal better at running speeds.
~Are you having trouble starting it? If not you can probably live with that compression…..

Its a 46 electric start. it starts fine, but it puffs black smoke quite a bit when a loads is taken off, like if im pulling something heavy, aprox 500lbs, it pulls it ok, but when you disingage the clutch it puffs black smoke, it has a new carb and mag on it.

If you have an All-fuel B, it should be 70 pounds. A Gas B should be 110 pounds.

The difference in compression isn't too bad, almost even-which is good. It may be a little low, but I think it would at least run. My opinion of course. We have a D with REALLY low compression-never measured it, but it did run by pull starting.

I got the pressure measurements from an I+T manual.
