I need to replace the rear tires on a John Deere A. It currently has 11-38 tires on it. I have been told that to get the same size tire as the 11-38 I must get a 12.4-38. Is this correct? I was told that tires currently sold as 11.2-38 are smaller than the 11-38 tires that orginaly came on the A. Is this correct?

A 12.4x38 is the "new" discription for the "old" 11x38 size. Likewise, 13.6x38 is the same size as the original 12x38 size. What happened was, about 45 years ago, the terms discribing tire size were changed from rim width (11" or 12" in the examples) to tread width (12.4" or 13.6"), with the rim diameter remaining unchanged. Other sizes were also affected. Your A likely had 11x38 tires originally, so the size "12.4x38" is exactly the same size as the old designation. Perhaps you should be glad that your tires arn't discribed as 315x966 (Metric aproximation for 12.4x38)!

Clyde, that is a beautiful tractor. I am guessing it is around a 1946 model. It is really sharp.

A 12.4 will fit well and look good.I personally like the looks and fit of the 13.6 on factory rims but 12.4 will be closest to original.

I have a 1950 A it has 13.6 x 38 on it.13.6's are a common tire and will be cheaper than 12.4's.Just my 2 cylinder cents.
