My head gasket leaks even after retorquing the nuts. i bought a new gasket and going to replace it. How do i go about removing the oil line going to the tapets? do i just unscrew the fitting and pull the head off? When installing the gasket, should i soak it in oil for a while, then let it drip out for a while?

Joe, are you SURE it is the head gasket leaking & not the push rod tubes?
~Where is the water ending up?
~You didn't give a year or S/N on the "B" so I'm guessing it has the oil lead washer & line going to the oilier tube? If so just remove the line & the washer will come loose when you remove the head retaining nuts.
~On the gasket, I personally don't soak them in oil but use #3 Permetex around the outer edges & around the oil & water passages [don't use sealer on the fire rings] & install that way, [have never had a leaker]....The only problem with using Permetex on the head gasket is you must do a re-torque after a hot run cycle [but you should do that anyway].....

Joe , I aint Clooney but if you bought a new fiber head gasket it will not need to soak and it will fit on either face of the gasket but if you got one of the old kind with copper inserts it must fit to the block a certain way and it will need to soak a few min . Is the head flat ,if not you need to mill it flat so the new one wont leak. My 2 cent worth.

Did you replace the lead washers on the head bolts behind the nuts? These could cause you to have a pretty good water leak.

Nathaniel, I think those lead washers are simply used as a lubricant for torquing the head, and don't do anything else except to make the head more difficult to get off next time. If your head gasket is sealing properly you shouldn't have any coolant around those head studs.

Exactly right Bob. By the time you're done torquing the head, there is nothing more than a very thin film of lead between the nuts and the head - I've made it a habit to use a utility knife and trim the excess pieces of lead off, lest they fall off and get in the crankcase, etc.
I don't believe the head studs go into the coolant passages (I could be wrong), so there isn't any chance for coolant to get out around the head nuts.
