How do I know which operator's manual to purchase for my JD 1010? There are three different ones. I imagine the serial number would help but I can't read it. I just purchased this tractor last week.

Also, I need to either repair or replace the tachometer. Is this something I can do myself?

Jeff, check the tractor photos in the gallery or look at the photo ads in the marketplace sections. Or if you'll send me your email I can send you some pictures of some of the 1010's I have collected. I have manual and a parts list for one if you are interested. You can also go to jdparts.deere.com and sign up to view the parts catalog online.

I am also in NC and recently had a terrible time finding 1010 brake parts. Also, I tried to sign up for the J-D online parts catalog access and could never make it work. What is the trick?

I am in Whitakers NC and have a 1010. I have some problems with my generator and I would also love to find out what year model it is. I cannot find any tag with any numbers on it on the block as I was instructed it would be one there about middle way. I can jump start my 1010 and it runs fine. If you pull the hot wire off of the battery it will cut off. Isn't the generator suppose to be able to keep the motor running if it is working properly? I thought the battery was bad and replaced it. I guess I wasted my money as I still have the same problem with the battery not charging up. What to do next? Thanks for your help!
Donnie,

It took about three tries for me to sign up. The problem I had was from the local JD dealership. I was told I was the first one they had inquire about the parts online service and they weren't sure what they had to do to set it up. Try calling the JD dealer(s) you have to choose from when you sign up and tell them what you are trying to do.

I got the one for my 1010 at either a Quality Farm and Fleet store or at TSC. Can't remember which. The main difference in determining which manual you need is, I believe, which style of tractor you have. I have an RU (row crop utility) which has some significant differences from other tractors -- like the brakes that I just repaired. But the manual I have covers it, so I think if you go to your J-D dealer with tractor height, wheel size, position of front wheels, etc. they can tell you what the style is.

JD will sell you those tachs all day long for about a 100 a pop. The cable is usually ragged out also and is available at JD.
