Ok, I know this isn't a John Deere question, but you all are some mighty knowledgeable fellows, so I thought I might ask. Today I was given a pretty old (mid 60's??) lawn tractor by an old gentleman that I know. It is a "Western Auto Wizard," model # MTD7300A67. I assume the 67 at the end means it is a 1967 model, but I'm not sure. My question is, what are the odds of finding parts for this tractor? It is in decent shape, and I know he would be tinked pink if I could make her new again. I know it needs minor work in the steering, and is in desparate need of a paint job. Would decals be possible to find for the old mower or not? She is gonna need some engine work, or a new engine (8 hp Briggs and Straton). I am doing this more for his sentimental reasons than anything, but I think I would like to have an "antique" mower as well. I assume these machines are somewhat rare, because I can't find any info on it at all. If any of you could tell me where to find part/decal costs, general information, value, etc etc, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance guys, you are always a big help!

Help from an "old" Western Auto dealer. Me and my late father ran a dealer store for 20 years and here is the scoop on your machine.
The first three digits denote the manufacturer; MTD = out of Cleveland, Ohio
The next four digits and the letter denote the model code.
The last two digits denote the year of manufacturer read in reverse! Therefore the "67" is actually a 1976 model machine.
Hope this helps! Parts should be readily available but decals will need to be custom made!
Regards, Bryan

It's an MTD. Just go to the company and see what they can tell you. Incidentally, I bought a Farm King (another proprietary MTD) that I used for about a dozen years until it was more than worn out. I left it at the place when we moved away. About seven or eight years later we stopped by for a visit and the second owner (already) of the place wondered about the history of the old mower that was still there. He said whoever bought it originally made the best investment in the world. Go figure! Get yours running and you might still get a lot of service out of it. By the way, I suppose you have noticed that if you go to the bottom of this message board you have the option to skip to other message boards. There is one for garden tractors with a lot of MTD discussions the last time I looked at it.

I work at a store that sells Ranch Kings made by MTD. While they don't have the reputation that the JDs and Cub Cadets enjoy, I still feel they give a good value for the money. Up until 5 or 6 years ago the third digit in the model number would tell you the year built. Yours is a zero so that would indicate 70, 80, or 90. I'm just guessing here but I'd say with an 8 HP engine it'll be made in 1980. Call Red River Sales in Memphis Texas for the steering and engine parts. I'm afraid you're on your own when it comes to paint and decals.
Good luck with your project.

Wizard was/is a "store brand" name for Western Auto.Items sold under this label are built under contract by major mfgs. From the serial number I would suspect this unit was built by MTD and probably sold under several different store brand names by different chains.Contact MTD,who should be able to provide you some info. Some parts may be available, but generally it's a matter of visiting lawnmower graveyards.Decals usually have to be made(auto graphics shops),engine should be pretty straight forward,tranny/axle are probably Peerless/Dana as used on many tractors. As to year,5-7hp seemed to be norm for 60s,7-10(70s),8-11(80s)12-18(90s)but others existed.

When I was growing up in the mid sixties our first riding mower was a Wizard. I think it was maybe a 4 1/2 horse and what a pile of junk. It was not running more than it was running. I think it took us two summers before we finally wised up to the fact that we could do our mowing quicker with our push mowers than with the Wizard. The thing is though, at the time we were really excited to have it and always looked forward to cutting grass. Just a part of youth I guess. As to your question, most of the Western Auto stores that are still in business have good repair shops and knowlegdable people working there or at least the two I trade with do. That would be my first stop.HJ
