I have a 1956 model 50 with the single front wheel that came out of California. It also has an "orchard exhuast" that exits under the right axle. The regular exhaust exit on the hood has what looks to be a factory plate attached over it. Was this a factory option or just a home-made remedy?

The 50-shaped piece of rust appears to have once been that way, and still has the cap in the hole in the hood, but now just has a short stub of exhaust pipe permanently rusted to the manifold.

David,How's the 50 shaped piece of rust coming along? I haven't seen any posts about it in a while.

That's because I haven't gotten anything done in a while. I had the block on a 4*4 between two saw horses with some PB BLaster in the cylinders. I put a piece of 2*4 in each cylinder and pounded on it with a hammer. This accomplished nothing except splashing the PB BLaster out of the cylinders and breaking a small chip off the wood. As for the oil pump, I was unable to remove it. In trying to remove it, I roughened the edges of the thing on the bottom, and bent the top a little, but it's still stuck. Did Deere glue it on?

I'm no expert on these old 2 cylinders, but I've got my H torn apart. I took the oil pump out of it a couple of weeks ago. Once I got all the lines and bolts off I took a long bar and put it in through the top opening on the crankcase. Holding ot against the oil pump, I gave it a few taps with a hammer. It didn't take much to get it to drop down where I could get it out. I've never worked on a 50 so it might be set up different though. There might be a bolt or a line you are missing.
Good luck with your project.

You have a rarer 50 (especially with the vegetable crop (California) front wheel) as there aren't too many around with the factory orchard style exhaust. The exhaust stack cover plate on the hood should have a little dent on one side too. Never could figure out why they did that, but there must have been a reason. On my 50's orchard exhaust, I had to refurbish the muffler and reverse-engineer a fixture for a new tailpipe bent at the local muffler shop. I have some pictures of it (at the house) and I'll try to post them here for you (and others) to see. It will be a good way to show off my completed restoration too.

Jody,The down under exhaust was a factory option.
