The starter for this 50 A looks good but hasn't been used in years. I wired it up to a battery to see if it would go and it doesn't. I haven't repaired these before and would like to hear what the right way to do it is, what solvents to use or not use, how to test the fields or brushes etc. or if it is best to just take it to someone else, tell me that. It doesn't hum but I can turn the shaft and the starter drive slides foreward fine. Thanks as always for your help.

Take the button contactor off and brighten the copper contact points w/ light sandpaper. Reassemble and bench test with the starter in a vise. If it doesn't work take it to a starter shop. When re-installing the starter on the tractor be sure the battery cable is disconnected from the battery.
