I'm trying to get this tractor started and it just backfires. When I turn on the key switch the coil starts sending spark to the plugs immediately without the unit being cranked? It has an Onan 18hp engine. Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong??

Hmmm..... that's a tough one. Is this a new problem or have you just installed the Onan engine in place of the original Kohler???
The original Kohler 17hp engine had points and battery powered ignition. If you have just installed a fairly new Onan engine then it may have a different (electronic) ignition system that can be damaged by connecting battery power to it. Start by finding out what model engine you have and what ignition system is on it and what the proper electrical connections are for it. You may have to wire things differently than the Kohler engine was. Unfortunatley, I do not have any reference material handy to look up the correct information for your Onan engine.

Craig, Thanks for the response!
This is a converted engine from the older kohler and it does have electronic ignition. I tryed to jump start it using a charger booster. Did I possibly cause a problem?

Did you also have a battery connected when you tried to jump start it? A charger booster is not intended to be used alone, must be used with a battery connected.
If I had some reference material here I could look up something about your setup. What model Onan engine do you have now? Did you just install this engine? Or has it been in a while and running before now? You could have fried the electronic ignition if battery power was connected to it. It may need a different ignition switch that grounds the electronic ignition system to shut off the engine. However, I don't know for sure with out any information to look at. You may need to do some wiring changes and maybe a different ignition switch from a later tractor with electronic ignition. Sorry I can't be of more help. Are you located anywhere near Hutchinson Minnesota?
