Do I remove the coating from newly machined part?

The shop that reground the camshaft sent it and the followers back but I haven't seen the coating like this used before. It is a black coating that almost reminds me of an 800 grit sandpaper with oil on it. Followers are the expected shiny metal I am used to seeing. Do I need to remove the coating from the cam lobes? If so, how would be the best way to do that? I wondered if that was to break in the parts or just to protect the shaft from rust? Thanks for all your help.

I believe the cam shaft was nitrided or something like that (not sure if I even have it spelled right). Might be same or similar to parkerizing mentioned by the other person. It's a chemical process that hardens the surface of the lobes. If you clean it off you have also removed the hardened surface. Yes, do call the shop and verify this. Happy tractoring.

Henry makes a good point. You probably should contact the machinist and find out for sure. If the substance is really "stuck" to the shaft, like it has been sprayed on and cured, I would think that it is a break-in aid, whereas if it is just smeared on, it is probably just to prevent corrosion, although I would expect them to use cosmoline or simple grease/oil and anti-corrosive paper, rather than take the time to apply something that has to be buffed off. I have seen a coating like you describe on new camshafts for V-8s, and I imagine it almost looks like the Parkerizing on some gun components. It wouldn't make much sense to have to use a wire wheel or someting on a newly-machined part. Please post back when you find out for sure, as my curiosity is up now.

My thoughts wouold be to call or see the shop that did the job. Get the poop directly from them as to what they put on the shaft before they sent it out and the purpose of the stuff that they put on it.

Do not remove that coating - more than likely it is a coating used to help the cam/lifter break-in process. The coating (like the cam assembly lube sent with new shafts) will help the lifters begin rotating as they follow the cam lobes - a non-rotating lifter will quickly wipe the lobe right off the shaft. If you look at a lifter that has been run, you will see a circular wear pattern where it contacts the lobe - that's from rotation. The lobes are also ground at a very slight angle for the same reason.
