Guys my neighbor has a 1020 that he bought new in 73. Its main duty is baling hay with a JD 364 square baler. It has 5000 hrs on it, approx 4000 baling with the 364. He has had to replace the Pressure plate and clutch approx 6 times since he bought it and each time, at least one ear is broken off the PP. Clutch plate is usually OK. Any idea or has anyone seen similar with 20 series? BTW the guy that has c/o the last 2 is a Factory trained JD tech and he works only on JD, I know he knows his stuff but he doesn't know on this one. He does this for a living and stays COVERED UP with work. THANKS. Any help appreciated.

Keith, I have never been into a 1020, but let me share my expierence with a 430. The center housing has a pipe pressed into it that the throw out bearing collar slides back and forth on. This tube or pipe is like a short piece of exaust pipe. It can become loose in the housing and will move forward, coming in contact with the pressure plate fingers. This can cause them to break. I have had to tack weld the pipe to the housing. The only other thing I can think of may be the linkage or clutch adjustment may be letting the throw out bearing go too far. Like I said, I don't know how the 1020 is made, might be a clue.
