I was looking for front end weights for my 730D and didn't know what they looked like. I wondered if 720 weights would fit, figured they might.

I rarely see pictures of these tractors with front end weights. Were these tractors not commonly equipped with the weights like the 4020's were?

My 720D was light on the front and needed them when I was farming; on the other hand my 4010 was heavy on the front and didn't need weights as bad, however most farmers bought weights on these 4010's and 4020's.

I found a good tractor picture showing front end weights on a 720D, it is on page 14 of the Jan. 04 isssue of "Farm Collector" for those of you that are interested.

At least now I know what to look for. A friend works on tractors and mounts front end loaders and removes front weights and has a fairly large collection of these; Ford, Case, JD and others. He also has some really big wheel weights that look like they are for the older tractors, they are JD yellow, but neither he or I knew what they fit. I seem to remember seeing some of these used on the old D John Deeres. I guess I should check the numbers and find out what they fit. Some of you might need them.

.....John, I went to an auction in south central PA recently and the weather was miserable..... 45 degrees, windy and a cold rain out of the North..... .yet a 3-piece set of 20/30 series front weights went for $825 in fast bidding.....the guy that had the top bid had a look in his eye that told me he didn't care what he had to pay.....the same attitude was going on with the 3-point hitches, square tubular wide fronts, top links and flat top fenders..... there was so much interest that they had to have one auctioneer specifically assigned to sell that stuff.....
Good luck to all!
Bo

I agree with Bo that the "extra's" are up in the big bucks. Some auctions will sell the tractor complete, but most will strip the tractor and then sell all the "extra's, EXTRA. When reproduction parts come out, that also set the price for the old factory stuff. I think the reproduction 3Pt's complete now are about $1,000 plus $300 for the elephant ears. plus freight. The 3 piece reproduction front end weights are $375. and the 6 piece set is $750. and depending on where you live, that much more in freight. Used factory flat tops used to sell for up to $800, are now down to the $200 range of the reproduction fenders.
m When I did the 630 this fall, I let the factory fenders go for a "someday I'll get around to do project" and just put on a set of reproduction fenders.. You have to strip them down to bare medal as they only have a primer that gets schrached during shipping. You also have to drill a hole for the second light. The dimple is there, but no hole to mount the light. Other then that, on the inside JD had an angle that goes over the casting where it mounts, and the repo's have a flat iron. No reproduction rear wheel weights that I know of, but the last set I bought was $45. a piece. Got 4 of them and they are on the backup 730. That was about two years ago.

Hey Mike: Where do you get the blots for the wheel weights?
Do you use the original type splined bolts? It's getting hard to find something that size with a square head.

John,

The correct splined square headed bolts are available from John Deere dealers. Beware, at $4 each they are not for the faint of heart! If it is not your intention to change the weights frequently, Deere also has a square head bolt without the splines for about $1.5 each. The bolts are 5/8" x 3". I do a little antique tractor pulling and need to change the weights quite often, so I bite the bullet and buy the expensive ones. The straight square head bolt will work fine, but are much more difficult to line up.

Thanks 720. I won't change them once I put them on...at least not often. I need to add a few to the 2520 for loader work.

"Some auctions will sell the tractor complete, but most will strip the tractor and then sell all the "extra's,EXTRA."

..... Mike, this was a lesson I had learn the hard way about 7 years ago when I decided I wanted to buy a 730..... I drove 150 miles to pre-view a 730 that was coming up for auction..... .when I went back on Saturday the wide front had been pulled off and a roll-o-matic put on, the 3-piece front weights were pulled off, ditto for the 3-point hitch and the top link.....they did leave the flat tops on, and the auctioneer really talked that up; like they were doing the crowd a favor..... I was disgusted and came home empty handed..... when I told my JD mechanic about it he said "you're going to see more and more of that in the future.....the extras are worth more off the tractor than they are on it"..... how right he was.....
Good luck to everyone!
Bo

A set of reproductive set of 5 on our backup 730 and a set of three factory and three reproduction set on my brother-in-laws 720. his 6 piece set has the top weight. There all the same for the 720/730 and you can't tell the repo's from factory in looks or weight. also have pictures of the rear wheel weights. have 4 on the 730 and 8 on the 630 MIKE HANLEY

Typo in the e-mail no space between yahoo and the dot com. Should be hanleyranch@yahoo.com On the rear weights for the 50/730/3010/4020's there were two differant kinds. The early ones and the later ones. They all would fit, but the early ones had a smaller hole so that only two weights could be on and still get a wrench on the rach and pinion to change wheel spaceing. On the later ones, the holes were bigger so that up to 4 weights could be on and still get a wrench on the rack and pinion. On our 630 we have two of the early ones on the inside and two later ones on the out side, so that with the 4 weights on per wheel we can still change wheel spacing without taking off weights.
