I've got a John Deere 2030 (Mannheim)that has been making a loud intermittent clanking noise from the rear axle area. It has been getting worse and I haven't been able to isolate the problem yet. It seems to make the noise mostly when I start up or let off on the accelerator, but it makes it occasionally at other random times too. It comes from one side or the other, but not both at the same time. If I apply a single brake, it does seem to affect it and it seems that I can make it happen. Any ideas? Here's hoping it's the brakes and not the differential!

Well, I contacted John Deere this morning - to schedule it in the shop. Yes, I looked for loose lugs and any other not-so-obvious sources of the noise, but it really seems to be coming from inside the rear axle/differential area - and it's getting worse! Not a happy feeling - but what's a fella to do!

Check out easy things before getting too serious. I had a tractor that had a loose wheel weight that caused a strange noise. Also check for a loose loader mount causing noise before tearing apart the trans.

John

I had one of those and it turned out to be teeth missing on the ring gear. I don't know anything about how your tractro is built. On mine, I was fortunate (yeah right) enough to find a cover plate that I could pull and shine a flashlight in on the ring gear. Hope that isn't your prob :) .
