Thought maybe I should be more detailed. While I was trying to start it, the carberator flooded with gas. What needs to be done to get it running when this happens? Will the gas get into the oil? I am thankful for any advice.

The most likely cause is the needle valve in the carb. bowl that shuts off the inflow from the fuel tank failed. It could be the needle oriface was clogged, the needle bent, or the float stuck or filled with gas. If you havn't recently adjusted the float setting, it's one of the above.

If the overflow just occured once, and you shut off the fuel line quickly, I wouldn't worry about oil contamination. If the tractor ran for a while in this condition, I'd probably change the oil. I wouldn't want gasoline vapor in my 47A crankcase. You could blow your "parts" off.

Sammual, depending on how much fuel you flooded it with most will end up in the oil if it sat after the flooding. If it was a sizeable amount, an oil change is probably is in order.
~While trying to start, only use the choke for a few revolutions then go to 1/2 choke or none.
~Once it has flooded, pull the spark plugs & either replace them or clean them [I use starting ether if the fouling is only fuel].
~Before trying to start again, motor the engine or turn it over to expel some of the fuel in the cylinders. [throttle closed & choke off]
~Make sure you have a BLUE spark that will jump at least a 1/4" gap repeatedly [if not find out why & repair it, or your tractor will flood easily] ~While trying to start, don't use high throttle settings with the choke full on [that pulls raw fuel directly from the main nozzle].
~If a hand start, try starting with the petcocks only open far enough to allow you to barely turn it over [the old big diameter petcocks will let too much compression out at low hand cranking speeds]
