I am starting to restore a JD A it has electric start. Even with the air cocks open I can not turn the flywheel over by hand. I have good spark. Whenever it is running it sounds as though it is firing too often, they are not even puts, more like a 4 cylinder fireing on 3 cylinders. What spark plugs should I buy? I ordered manuals but they have not arrived and I am anxious. I tried moving the magneto back and forth. Thanks for taking your time to help a beginner.

To time a 47 A, line up the small dot on the flywheel with the mark on the bottom of the flywheel cover. That's TDC. From your description, I can't tell if you have a problem or not. If it runs, has good oil pressure, oil is not spraying out somewhere, it doesn't smoke tremendously, and the valves are set correctly, it's probably ok - at least until you get the manuals. You could do a compression check however. That will tell you a lot about the condition of the engine.
