I have a '41 Model B and cannot get it started unless I pull the plugs and squirt starter fluid into the cylinder heads. As soon as I do this it fires up on the first turn and runs fine. The carb has been rebuilt (by Robert's). The only thing different from original is I don't have a magneto but a coil. Any ideas why it won't start?

Thanks

Don, make sure the choke is closing ALL the way. If it is, then try different throttle settings while cranking.
~You might try opening the idle screw 1-2 more turns for starting only.
~If none of the above helps & you are using FRESH regular gasoline [not premium or gas with alcohol] you might be fighting a weak spark [ether ignites much easier than gasoline].
~Take an old spark plug & open the gap to 1/4" then install in one wire at a time & lay on the block, then crank the engine & make sure you have a blue spark that will jump that 1/4" gap for many time in a row [if not find out why & repair].
~If you have a good spark, try opening the spark plug gap to around .040” to see if that helps [sometimes it does]
~If everything above is ok, give the engine a cold compression test, low compression will make starting difficult & once started can run good due to less ring leakage due to faster piston speed. If the cold compression is low, try using a little 2-cycle oil in the gasoline as sometimes that will help the ring seal better at slow cold cranking speeds….
