Today i just got done building a 20 foot tandom axel trailer. i was pulling it down the road with my B just to see how it went, well, the trailer takes a 2 5/16 inch ball, i only have a 1 7/8 ball, so i was pulling, figured since i dont have a load, it wont hurt, well im going up this pretty steep hill that has a house full of drunks at the bottom and i had a friend on the tractor with me, so im going up this hill and the trailer pops off the ball and my friend runns back to catch and pulls his hardest on the trailor and the neighbor helps, he was outside, and they stop it within 20 feet of the house!!! all i could do was watch, it was sooo loud draging on the road. then we hooked it back up and he stood on the tongue and we pulled it home. There would have been the biggest law suit out of this! A LITTLE TIP: USE THE CORRECT SIZE BALL!!!! I just got luck my friend and neighbor was there!

First off, why didn't you pick up a 2 5/16 ball when you picked up your trailer hitch? I could see making a short pull on level ground with the way you did it but never up a hill or going fast enough to hit a bump and bounce the hitch off the ball. You were extreamly lucky and I believe the man upstairs was definatly looking out for you that day! Very lucky no one was hurt! We all do things at times that we look back on and wonder why we did that, mostly after something like this has happened and something did get damaged or someone hurt. Being over cautious is always a good thing to be!

I had a boat trailer come unhitched once. The saftey chains did there job so there was no damage. The guy I bought it from told me I needed a 1-7/8" ball so I took off the 2" I had and bought a 1-7/8. Found out I should have left the 2" on.

Don't ever pull a trailer without safety chains! Even a short trial run up the road. First you are probably trying it out because you are not certain everything is correct and working right. As you found out, it wasn't, thus always use safety chains!

I have always pulled hay racks and farm wagons but it would seem to me a pintle hook set up is ultimatly safer on a trailer. Don't know why balls are used, pulled military equipment many miles on the highway with pintle hook.

My Aunt and Uncle almost got killed by a situation like this, guy thought 1 7/8 was plenty for a 2" hitch. Trailer came off as he was turning at the stop light hit my aunt and uncle, while they were stopped, 2 hrs later with the jaws of life, finally got my aunt out of a full size chevy van. 1 yr later she could walk again. Tough decision $15 ball or somebodys life!!

wasn't that risky for you friend to stand on the tounge as it had already came loose once. Both him and the trailer would have been on the loose.

Another trailer problem involves loading. Probably everyone is aware of this but after reading about this I mention it. When driving your tractor onto a trailer attached to a pickup the trailer can lift the rear of the truck which will then move-maybe into something. This happens as the tractor weight is all on the rear edge of the trailer. I cut two pieces of wood slightly longer than the distance from the trailer edge to the ground. I prop these against the trailer edge on an angle and back the trailer up slightly and they then wedge under the trailer edge and prop it up when loading. To remove drive forward.

Joe; Accidents happen when people assume "everything will be all right" when they know what they are doing is not correct. Tractors can be dangerous. Trailers can be dangerous. Put them together and you have to be extra careful. I'm glad that no one was hurt. Tugboat
