I just rebuilt my 3010 gas engine and wanted to know the oil pressure so I picked up a generic guage at the auto parts store and disconnected the tractors idiot light and hooked it up. It reads about 25 to 28 psi after running a couple of minutes. Is this ok oil pressure? The reason I rebuilt the engine is because the skirt broke off the front piston and the tractor started to knock. So I put all new sleeves pistons bearings etc. Should i have replaced the oil pump also? When I first started the engine the head was leaking antifreeze on the left side, and then oil was leaking around the back right corner of the head. Head was origonally torqued to 115 then to 125. Seems to have stopped but only run second time for about20 min. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

John,

Poppers run 10 to 15psi. From memory, a NewGen spec is 25 to 30. A popper turns around 1000 rpm and you're turning -- 2500 to 3000 max? Big oil galleys and plenty of flow or velocity reduce pressure -- Bernoulli's law and all that. Should be OK. Also, you might be runnig some 10-30W or thin break in oil to seat the rings -which makes a difference in pressure readings. If the manual says you're low, there's probably a way to turn up the wick on the pump. The manual should show you how.

Torque. How accurate is your torque wrench? Head torque spec I remember for my NewGen tractor is 110 ft/lbs. Years ago I got crazy and bought a Snap On mucho dinero dial torque wrench. Best they spec'ed it at was + or - 2%. If you pulled 115 out of a manual and then turned it up to 125, that's an ~8% differential. Could fall within the acceptable tolerance of a click type or old floating indicator type torque wrench.

Double check your service manual on the pressure. If you rebuilt without a manual, I admire your bravery and native intelligence. There are one or two guys on here who turn wrenches at JD dealers for a living, so you'll probably get an exact number showing up in a day or two. Meantime, I don't think you're in too bad a shape.
