Spraying John Deere Paints

I have not been satisfied with the results I have been getting spraying JD Buff Primer, Yellow (not the fast dry kind) and the Classic Tractor Green. It appears to be too thick when I thin it with John Deere Paint thinner at the ratio listed on the paint can (2parts thinner to 10 parts paint)

Can some of you veteran painters tell me how to correctly thin it, what preasure you are spraying, and what spray nozzle size you are using, etc. Should I switch to automotive products?

I have a Sharpe spray gun with a #2 and #8 nozzle and a compressor that has plenty of volume (+11 scfm @ 90psi)

Any advice is appreciated.

Jess, 10/2 should spray ok, you could try 10/3 but it sounds more like an atomization problem. Try 40-50 lbs air pressure. ~Pull the tip & cap & make sure you don't have a paint build up inside the cap or tip & the needle is not rusted or paint covered.
~If your gun has an in cup filter on the pick up tube remove that & just strain the paint before putting in the cup.
~Make sure the air vent isn't plugged.
~Spray a test pattern on a piece of tin or glass & make sure you are getting a good EVEN pattern without an hourglass look & the paint lays out good. ~Try different paint & fan adjustments & most important different gun movement speed.
~I can't comment on your gun cap size but just for general information with my gravity feed & enamel cap I can spray un-thinned [just hardener 1 oz per 8 oz of paint] Deere green & get good results at 55lbs air pressure. I usually thin at 10paint/1.1 hardener/3 reducer [not Deere reducer though]..... ...

I've had no trouble spraying that way but I use 45# of preasure at the gun and also use a hardner at the rate of 1pt. per gal of paint.

I`m no expert painter but..... ..... Dont be afraid to experiment a bit. Poor atomization is primarily caused by low air pressure.Try raising the air pressure at the gun. For example 30 lbs at the gun means 30 with the trigger pulled and spraying. Dont expect a one coat finish. Generally I do three, with the last coat thinned out a bit more. While Deere paints are allright,I have seen a number of posts from folks who`s experiences have sent them to other suppliers for many reasons. Look thru the archives on this site for more insight.
