Thanks for the information on the carb. adjustment. I still can't get the tractor started by hand cranking. If I pull the tractor, it will eventually start, but it is backfires through the exhaust some. I checked and reset my magneto points to .015". What is the proper way to set the timing? I turned the flywheel over fairly fast and I receive a spark, but since it's turning over fairly fast, I can't judge whether the timing marks are lined up when the points fire. If I turn the flywheel slowly in order to see where the timing mark is when the points spark, I don't see a spark. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to time this machine? Is there something else that I should look for? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks James

jlashbrook, I think you have found your problem... "If I turn the flywheel slowly in order to see where the timing mark is when the points spark, I don't see a spark"...You must have a blue spark at the spark plugs at very slow flywheel speeds for it to hand start. What do you have for a mag? Can you hear the mag snap when turning the flywheel by hand? Give us the make & model of mag & we can help.....

Thanks for the reply. I went to the John Deere dealer and purchased a new set of spark plugs. The plugs the dealer gave me, Champion D23, were different than the plugs that were in the tractor, Champion D21. I put in the new plugs and I got it started by hand cranking. I'm still getting some flames out of the exhaust no matter how I set the carb. What could be causing this? Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks,

James
