1020/301 Power Steering Acting Up

A while back I submitted a post regarding the power steering on my 301 making squawking noises. I was advised to make sure the filter, screen and oil were clean. I changed the filter, checked the screen (very clean), but didn’t change the oil. It looked good and I wasn’t equipped to deal with 10 gallons of waste oil. I topped up the fluids after the filter change/screen check. The power steering still acts strange.

It makes strange noises when I start to turn the wheel. Doesn’t turn hard, just makes noise. The loader seems to work fine with no strange noise. One weird thing though, I can be turning the steering and raising the loader at the same time, and things work just fine except when the steering passes center; at that point the loader very briefly stops raising. Once past center the loader continues to smoothly raise. Also, there seems to be a lot of play in the steering. I can’t see anything that looks loose in any of the visible parts, but it takes a lot of concentration to keep it on the road.

Anyone have any brilliant thoughts, or should I just throw my checkbook at the local JD shop? Thanks.

Dave,
Another idea to throw on the pile.
You might check for a leak or a crack on an intake line to the steering pump. The air coming in could explain the noise as cavitation.

My 1020 always had noisy hydraulics. The sound would diminish when steered or loader and 3 pt hitch operated.I never much worried aboutit and havent had any problems associated withit. In your case it sounds like the priority valve may need some kind of attention. As far as the lose steering, 90% of the time the bushing/bearing in the bellcrank is worn. Under fifty bucks if you do it yourself. Two hundred if the bellcrank pivot is shot. Ive replaced all my Deeres bearing/bushings when steering gets looser than Id like. Usually around 1500 hrs if its loader equiped.
