I went to a tractor pull/show this past weekend, their was a guy vending carbs. He had what he called large nut carbs, that would increase my A's hp.by 3-4hp.are their such carbs, or was he selling me a line? If there is such a carb, what kind of carb numbers should i be looking for?He was asking $325.for it.

I had a friend who tried one on his A, but it would not run very well.

The big nut carb he was referrign to were the ones used on the G's, DLTX 51 or 53 I forget? Their lower brass bowl nut is larger than the other carbs. (ie the term big nut) Anyway, they can supply more CFM and more fuel than the stock A Carb, so if the A can take it without wasting it as excess unburned fuel out the stack, its theoretically possible to gain horsepower. The volume of the cylinder, the compression ratio, rpm, temp. air flow efficiency etc etc etc still determine theoretical limits to how much fuel is needed or how much can be used, however, and beyond those limits, the biggest carb in teh world doesnt add much. One problem is that just because that carb can supply more fuel, you still have to get more air in to match it to achieve the proper fuel/air mixyure which is around 15 to 1. Short answer though, it would probably help a little if the tractor is tuned and used to its max efficiency. The pullers use and get increased HP from them but remember, they are usually running higher compression and extra cubes from boring/stroking etc. Good Luck Ol John T Engineer in Indiana

MY BROTHER HAS THE BIG NUT CARB. WHICH IS A DLTX-51 ON HIS JD-B AND RUNS QUITE WELL. BUT THE TRACTOR IS BORED AND STROKED FOR PULLING. HE PUT IT ON THE TRACTOR BECAUSE IT WOULD FLOW MORE AIR THAN HIS JD-B CARB.
