I purchased this A a few years back in rough but running shape. Recently, it started backfiring back through the carburetor. I decided it was time to take the head off to be rebuilt, put on a rebuilt carburetor and check and double check the ignition timing. The tractor would not start and if it did it wouldn’t run long. What I found was the Left Hand Exhaust Valve is opening late (about 1 o’clock instead of 3 o'clock). Sometimes it seems like it opens at slightly different positions of the flywheel. There are definite signs that someone was in this engine before (homemade markings). Is it possible the cam gear was put back on the cam wrong at one time to cause the valve timing to be off? Bad cam maybe? Just trying to get an idea of what I am in for, before I open her up, any thoughts on this would greatly be appreciated.

Jim, look for wear on all the cam drive interfaces like gear to gear & loose cam to gear bolts. ~My guess is you will find the L/H cam bearing is worn & extremely loose or almost gone.
~Don't get too excited & just tear into it, start slowly & pull the top crankcase cover & reach in & grab the cam & shake it up & down, fore & aft & latterly to see if you can find if it is loose in the bearings. Then pull the L/H cam bearing cap & look for a bad bearing. Try to identify the origin of the problem before you have a pile of parts on the floor so you can understand what happened & what has to be repaired.....

Jim B,
Might check to be sure the cam gear is tight on the camshaft. A friend's G actually quit running when the last bolt broke. He managed to get out all of the pieces and bolt it all back together without taking anything else apart. That was over 20 years ago and she's still running. The crankshaft gear might be loose also, but thats a real long shot. That's about all I can think of that would make the valve timing vary, it's either timed right or wrong but won't change one time to the next. LOL, Paul
