Just for the record, this relates to a new purchase (for me) of a 59 IH cub. BUT...I ask this question to my home JD group who I know and TRUST!!!! Does anyone know a simple way of charging a 6 volt battery with a 2/10 amp 12 volt charger?
I'm sure you electrical engineers out there are laughing at this one!!!
Thanks in advance,
Ron
PS: My first love is my 1941 JD H that is now running thanks to those who helped me here.

You can connect a 6 Volts seal beam in serie with your 6 volt battery. It will take longer time to
charge your battery but it work well

Thanks for the info - It makes sense now that I see it in black and white. As always - thanks!

Yea, electrical is a little forgiving, but going double over is just too much.

You might want to consider an 8v battery. Some folks get them to work by turning the tractor regulator up a bit on a 6v system. Hard on the lighting tho. A 12v wall charger will charge an 8v battery with much less risk, and the tractor starter won't mind the extra 2 volts, will spin a little better. I never have heard what happens to the lighting & instrament pannel stuff tho. Do the points need a resistor?

Ron,
I am an electrical engineer.
Do not just connect the 12V charger to the 6V battery, at best you probably would burn out the charger, at worst the battery might explode. The post by Danny is correct that you can connect two 6V batteries in series and charge them with a 12V charger. A resistor in series with the battery could allow you to charge with your charger, but this would have to be about 0.7 ohms and capable of more than 70 watts. I would not recommend this. The best thing to do is buy a charger with 6V setting. In the long run having the correct charger will save you time and problems.

I think you could charge two six volts in series. (if I'm wrong I'm sorry for the bad info)

You are right. After all, each battery cell is about 2 volts. Six volt battery has three cells connected together, Twelve volt has six cells connected together. So two sixes sitting next to each other with a jumper cable between a pos and neg post leaves a neg and pos post open, and the voltage between those open posts will be about twelve volts.
