I am considering buying a John Deere 1010 diesel two wheel drive with about 800 hours. I would like to use it to bale hay. Has anyone had experience with using a 1010 for haying. My land is hilly.

probably $4000 may be in line if it is the late model unit. I like live power and the transmission shift is the best model....they made two models, early model had 430 rear end, later models had different rear end and had transmission shift. All models are exceptionally weak, low torque. You have keep RPMs in the mid range to obtain torque. They used a short stroke, probably combine type engine. I have had a lot of JD's and had a 1965 model and it ran good but it performance was mediocare to say the least. I would never buy another one. A good 420/430 will work circles around them and a good 1020 is a champ. If the tractor does not have live power it is probably worth closer to $3000.

check previous posts about the 1010. I'd recommend a good 1020.

Are there advantages to a 1020 over a 1010 other than parts availability? The advantage of the 1010 is that it is on the market now, and I don't know where to get a 1020. Also, he's asking roughly $4000 for the 1010. I haven't seen it, yet, but is he even in the ball park?

Thanks for the reply

Value is always in the eyes of the beholder, but I paid $2250 for my 1010RU.
