Today I got my latest treasure a John Deere 2-bottom Plow. I need to know what model it is and the appoximate time it was built. It has beam numbers 583 and 623. It has 2-16" bottoms.

I need to find some parts for it. The 2 front wheels are cut-offs and have 6.00-16 tires on it. The back rim is rusted through where would I find something like that at? Also I need the little piece that holds down the L-shaped piece on the breakaway.

How would I go about getting the trip mechanism to work?

One of the mold-boards has a rust hole in one place can this be welded and then ground down?

Thanks for all of your help,
Ryan

Well, my specialty is the 51 and 52 plow. Your plow like Put Put said is a #4 plow. There is a guy that knows the 4 plows very well. I hope he reads your post and helps you more. Here is a link for you to look at.

For your parts that you need. You will have to go to a junk yard that has implements for parts.

As for the trip. There is dogs inside with some springs that make it work. Pull the wheel off of the axle with the drum on it. These are fairly simple to work on.

Go to Deere and ask for all the manuals for a 4B, 4C, and 4D plow.

For a user, what can it hurt to weld up the mold board and grind it down. If it don't work. It wasn't going to plow with a hole in it anyway.

Good luck. Sorry I can't help any more.

Will P.,
I'm pretty sure it is a 4B because I think with the 4C and 4D one was a grub plow and the other was an orchard plow. Or I think so anyway. What is the difference between a 4B and a 44? Could my Long-hood B handle this plow or not? Are 4.00-12 rear tires still avalible for a rear tire? What are these plows worth? Thanks for your help,
Ryan

4B was the most common plow of the 4 series. The 4 series plows are of cast frames. The 44 is all steel and bolt together frame. Long hood? Electric start early styled? Well I pull a 2-16" Oliver plow with my 43 hand start B. But it is just a little too much. My B dynos only at 21 HP. She is a totally stock JD cast iron piston kerosene burner. You would be better with 2-14" plow. Unless you have your B alittle hopped up.

The rear tire you can still get. But it is not angled like the one you probably have on the plow. It would look just like a regular tire. We (my brother-in-law) have a 2-16" Case with that tire on. And the Oliver too.

#4 plows I have seen go for $100-$500. Depending on condition and how much the people know.

Need any more help. Just email me.

Tonight I went to our farms junk yard to get my dad's steel wheeled 2b plow. On one beam it's stamped John Deere 623 and the other is stamped John Deere 583. Everything looks in tact except there's no hitch. You guys are talking about tires. How many years were they built? I would quess this one is from the 20's. But during WW11 I heard they couldn't get rubber.

Ryan-----

Your beam numbers indicate that you have a 4B, 4C, or 4D plow. As I recall, these were from the 40’s and early 50’s. If it’s 2x16’s it probably spent a lot of time behind an old “A” somewhere.

Will P. knows a lot about these old plows. Maybe he’ll post some help for you.

Ryan, you might benefit greatly if you get the jd parts manual for your plow. You can get a hold of John Deere Publications at 1-800-522-7448. I restored my 52 plow and the parts manual came very handy. As for the trip-clutch, I tried to repair and restore mine but in the end it was just plain worn out and I bought a "new" one. I just went to my local JD dealer and they helped me find a dealer who had the parts I wanted. I can't help you too much on your hole in the moldboard problem. Luckily, I didn't have to tackle that one. Hey if you have any other questions, contact me and I ll see what advice I can give.
