I'm preparing to replace the bearing [and race] at the lower end of the steering spindle on a 1950 Model A. What is the simplest way to get at it?

The front end is a "Roll-a-matic". If I have to unbolt the steering pedestal from the frame, what is a good procedure? Can the pedestal be manhandled once detached, or is it too heavy?

Thanks, Newell Ramsey

I just replaced the lower bearing in my '52 "A".
Here is my method. Remove the top nut from the shaft. Jack up the tractor about one inch. Place a brass or soft hammer on the shaft and then strike it with a heavy hammer. The shaft will go down and out of the sector gear. Remove the sector gear out of the way. You will need a big "A" frame hoist or similar arrangement to lift the front of the tractor up about three to four feet. The front shaft and all will slide down and out of the pedistal. This thing is heavy, but you don't need to move it very much. Remove the four bolts from the bottom of the pedistal and the cork seal and bearing can be pulled out with not much trouble. Take the bearing off the shaft, install a new bearing and cork seal, replace the gasket and lower cover, and you are ready to install the shaft and let the tractor down on the shaft. Be sure to install the bearing with the word "thrust" on the bottom. Once the shaft is back in the pedistal, install the sector gear and adjust the clearance with the eccentric bushing and install the lock screw. Grease it, cover it and it's done. Figure three to four hours.
